Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok emphasizes the great partnership between South Korea and the United States in the era of AI revolution

Stanford Center, Korea Energy Institute, SFR, and others sign LOI to collaborate on AI supercluster

Jeollanam-do signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Stanford Center, Korea Advanced Institute of Energy and Technology, and SFR-Stock Farm Road in San Francisco, USA, on the 26th (local time) to support the successful construction of the world's largest 15 trillion won ($15 billion) Solar City AI Supercluster Hub.

The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Young-rok, Governor of South Jeolla Province; Amin Badr-El-Din, Co-Chair of Stock Farm Road; Michael Lepech, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Stanford University; and Park Jin-ho, Acting President of Korea Advanced Institute of Energy and Technology.

The letter of intent states that the Stanford Center will participate in the Solarsido AI Supercluster Hub, agree to the joint research and development proposal, and actively participate in the project if it is deemed eligible for funding.

Under the agreement, the Stanford Center will provide the latest technical advice on global AI and superclusters, the Korea Institute of Energy Technology will conduct power grid optimization research and technology development, and Jeonnam Province will provide administrative support for the establishment of the AI Supercluster Hub.

Stanford University is the starting point of Silicon Valley's success story, which has produced the world's most Nobel Prize winners and the world's top scientific and technological talent.

The signing of the letter of intent is expected to further accelerate the project to build an 'AI Super Cluster Hub' that aims to attract the world's top universities to the Jeonnam Solar City Enterprise City by attracting their technical cooperation and participation in the global AI-based super cluster (data) field, which has emerged as a cutting-edge technology.

Jeonnam has a 200% electricity self-sufficiency rate and ranks first in Korea in renewable energy generation capacity (5.19 GW) and potential (444.2 GW), making it an optimal place to integrate the data industry, a representative power-hungry industry, and realize RE100 (Renewable Energy 100).

Based on this, Jeonnam-do is planning to invest KRW 148.1 billion by 2030 to build a 400,000㎡ 'industry, academia, and research energy cluster' comparable to Silicon Valley, centered on the Korea Advanced Institute of Energy Technology, the world's only university specializing in energy, using Stanford University as a model, which is attracting more interest from global companies and universities.

“In the era of the AI revolution, it is time for a great partnership between Korea and the United States,” said Governor Kim Young-rok. ‘We will actively support the successful and early establishment of the ’Solar Sido Al Supercluster Hub'.”

Prior to the signing of the letter of intent, Jeollanam-do signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with FIR HILLS, the Southwest Coastal Enterprise and Urban Development Corporation, and Haenam-gun to build the largest 3GW-scale AI supercluster hub in Korea by investing about 15 trillion won in Solar City by 2030.
