Every human is born with a "liveware" brain, whereas animals are born with a fixed-wired brain. There is a clear evolutionary reason behind this difference, and it comes down to the environment. Animals are born with fixed-wired brains because they belong to specific habitats, equipped from birth with the exact instincts necessary to survive within those ecosystems. On the other hand, if their habitat is destroyed, their chances of survival drastically drop. In contrast, humans are born with an incomplete brain, which allows us to adapt and survive almost anywhere. This remarkable adaptability is possible because our incomplete brains are continuously shaped and completed throughout our entire lives.
A proof for our brains shaped for our whole lives is a difference between a newborn baby's brain and adult's brain. According to the analysis results of brain scientists, newborn baby has lots of neurons and synapses. But adult has less neurons and synapses. The reason why is as we grow, the brain chooses efficiency. It strengthens the pathways for the languages we speak and the actions we repeat, while boldly cutting away the connections we do not use. In science, this process is called ‘Synaptic Pruning’.
The second proof is neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change its structure and pathways based on experience and learning. When you learn or repeat a new skill, the connections between your brain cells physically grow stronger and thicker. Taxi drivers who memorize thousands of streets have a physically larger hippocampus (the memory part of the brain) than regular people. The more they used it, the more it developed.
The brains show us our own stories. Dr. Ha Myung gi said that if you know the brain, you can find the hidden talents. Every new challenge we take and every positive choice we make rewires our neural pathways, opening doors to abilities we never knew we had. Ultimately, brain is not just a biological organ; the a blank canvas for the story of your life. By understanding and embracing the power of your brain, you hold the pen to write a brighter, more extraordinary tomorrow.
