The Ministry of Education announced that it will begin full-scale operation of the 'Capacity Building Training for Teachers in Charge of Elementary and Secondary AI Education,' developed to strengthen AI education in elementary and secondary schools.
The elementary teacher course of the 'Basic Course for Strengthening AI Class Competencies' was held from May 20 to 21, followed by the secondary information teacher course from May 29 to 30. Starting with this training, we plan to continuously conduct AI education competency enhancement training for approximately 3,000 teachers until the end of the year.
The training is conducted for elementary school teachers, secondary school information technology teachers, and high school teachers in charge of 'AI Mathematics,' and consists of customized courses that reflect the characteristics of each subject and the 2022 revised curriculum. A key feature of this training is its participatory and experiential structure, which features an integrated framework encompassing understanding, application, and ethics of AI, going beyond simple utilization. By enabling teachers to engage with AI concepts and principles, data and machine learning, AI ethics, and project-based problem-solving through practical exercises and case studies, the training is designed to allow for the immediate application of the content in the classroom.
In addition, based on a multi-track structure* that continues by stage and topic, a total of 11 courses will be operated this year, with a plan to ensure that a cumulative total of over 10,000 teachers complete AI education competency enhancement training by 2029. In particular, teachers in charge of AI-focused schools, which operate AI education more extensively than general schools, will be selected as priority targets, and field-oriented training operations will be strengthened to support the increased class hours related to AI and the operation of advanced curricula.
Minister of Education Choi Kyo-jin stated, “The core of AI education lies in the expertise of teachers who lead classes closest to the students,” adding, “The Ministry of Education will continue to expand the support needed in the field, along with the systematic development and operation of training, so that teachers can teach AI correctly and effectively in the school setting.”
